Crookham Rovers Youth win the Hampshire Cup for the third time in three years!
Under 16’s Hampshire Cup Final
Crookham Rovers Youth 3 Team Solent 0
Crookham Rovers U16 Youth have won the Hampshire Cup for the third time.
The team first won the trophy as the U14’s in 2015, then again last year as the U15’s. This year’s victory was won in a thrilling game against Team Solent FC from Southampton, held at Alton Football Club’s ground in front of a vocal crowd.
Despite having a number of county players in the opposition line up, Crookham Rovers were confident of pulling off an unprecedented treble and were two-nil up by half-time. The first was a well worked goal, with Josh Stepney being rewarded for his hard work by slipping the ball under the goalkeeper. A stunning second goal was added by Dylan Averiss, who drilled a volley from the edge of the box onto the underside of the crossbar and into the net after Team Solent’s defence had failed to clear a corner.
Even though they hit the woodwork twice, Team Solent failed to put Crookham Rovers under sustained pressure and, midway through the second half, Sam Whitehead sealed the win when he rose to meet a corner kick and headed home from six-yards out.
Neil Selby, manager of Crookham Rovers Youth, said: “The whole team were excellent and the passion and attitude shown by all the players was amazing. I am immensely proud of each and every player. The team ethic and spirit was there for all to see.
“We were up against a very talented and well organised team, but ultimately the tempo that we played at, and our work-rate, was what separated the two teams.”
Josh Stepney was selected as the Man of The Match by the Hampshire Cup sponsor, Savvy Accountants.
