Under 13s: Camberley Town Rebels 3 – 1 Crookham Rovers Cobras
- Defeat on the road
Today saw our league campaign get underway with a trip to Camberley Town. After last season’s success we were a little surprised to find out we had been moved up not 1 but 2 leagues, but excited for the challenge ahead.
It was a wet and windy day, but the boys were in good spirits and started the game well. Alex was standing in for Jayce in goal and was very confident, making some nice early saves. We grew into the game and started to create some chances. Eventually the breakthrough came. After some hard work pressing high up, Austin got the ball and took on a defender and smashed home to give Cobras a deserved lead. Camberley began to settle down and got the equaliser with a well taken goal. With half time seconds away, Camberley took the lead with the last kick of the half. A sucker punch for the Cobras who had battled well.
The second half was a real test of character. The wind and horizontal rain kicked in but both sides kept on battling. Cobras came close on a few occasions but could quite get the goal they deserved. Throwing bodies forward late on, we were hit on the counter and with the final kick of the 2nd half, Camberley got their 3rd goal to make it a final score of 3-1 to the home side.
On reflection the game didn’t feel like a 3-1. Stepping up 2 leagues to face quality opposition, the boys gave it their all and more than matched Camberley, but they took their chances and took the 3 points. Plenty to be pleased about and lots to work on. Player of the match was our captain Lucas, fully committed as always and not shy to step out of defence and get the team moving forward.
Onto next week and we welcome Yateley, our title rivals from last season to the Abercorn.
Up the Cobras!!
