Crookham Rovers U23s stun league leaders to reach Mike Smith Memorial Cup semi-final
Crookham Rovers U23s produced an outstanding performance to defeat league leaders, and local rivals, Fleet Spurs 4–1 in the quarter-final of the ADFL Mike Smith Memorial Cup at Cody Sports and Social Club.
Rovers started brightly and were rewarded with the opening goal when Kyle Duffin fired them into a 1–0 lead with a shot that sent the keeper the wrong way. Fleet Spurs responded to level the score at 1–1, ten-minutes later, but the hosts quickly regained control before the break.
The decisive moment of the first half came when Harry Barber produced a moment of real quality, delivering a defence-splitting pass with the outside of his foot to release Zach Hansell, who finished calmly to restore Crookham’s advantage and send them into half-time 2–1 ahead.
Rovers wasted little time extending their lead after the restart. Barber again turned provider early in the second half, setting up Hansell for his second goal of the evening to make it 3–1 and give the hosts a firm grip on the tie.
Crookham continued to press and wrapped up the victory when Ben Scarborough added a fourth goal, sealing an impressive win over the division’s league leaders and booking a place in the semi-final.
After the match, Crookham Rovers coach Andrew Barber praised his side’s effort and belief: “I’m incredibly proud of the lads today. They showed real character and quality against a very strong Fleet Spurs side. The work rate, the togetherness and the belief were outstanding. If we keep playing with that attitude and confidence, we'll be hard to beat in this competition.”
The victory sees Crookham Rovers U23s face Albury Eagles in the semi-final and move one step closer to silverware with a memorable cup performance against top opposition.
