Brave Semi-Final comeback not enough as Rovers bow out of Mike Smith Memorial Cup on penalties
Crookham Rovers U23s were knocked out of the Mike Smith Memorial Cup at the semi-final stage on Saturday, losing on penalties to Albury Eagles after a thrilling 2-2 draw that showcased the very best of what this young squad can produce.
The Eagles capitalised on some defensive errors and had established a commanding 2-0 lead by the 42nd minute, leaving Rovers with a mountain to climb at the break. What followed in the second half, however, was a display of genuine resilience and quality.
Eddie Plumber gave Rovers hope ten minutes after the restart, finishing well from the edge of the box to make it 2-1. Then, on 65 minutes, Zach Hansell produced a contender for the goal of the season. Receiving the ball in the centre circle, he cut his way through the Albury defence before calmly slotting past the keeper to level the tie. A few minutes later, Hansell turned provider, playing Harry Barber through on goal, only for his shot to be blocked when a winner looked on.
With the scores level after 90 minutes, the tie went to penalties. Goalkeeper Calum Walsh produced a fine save in the shootout, but with Tony Barnes the only Rovers player to convert, Albury edged through 3-1 to reach the final.
Rovers' gaffer, Andrew Barber, paid tribute to his players afterwards. "I couldn't be prouder of the lads," he said. "To come back from two goals down and level it up the way we did showed real character. It's a cruel way to go out, but that second half performance reminded me exactly why I love working with this group."
Skipper, Luke Gorton, added: "It hurts to go out, but I'm genuinely proud of every one of the team. We've developed so much as a squad this season and performances like today's second half show what we're capable of. We'll come back stronger next year."
With only two matches of the season remaining, this result will sting. But the spirit shown in that second half gives plenty of reason for optimism heading into next season.
